The survivors of the Stalinist NKVD camp in Fünfeichen have created something special: a culture of remembrance to commemorate war and post-war victims together.

Neubrandenburg - The Arbeitsgemeinschaft (AG) Fünfeichen is celebrating its 30th anniversary this Saturday in Neubrandenburg with a memorial service and a gala concert.

"We are grateful that reconciliation across graves became possible here," said Rita Lüdtke, head of the working group, of the German Press Agency.

The event at the Fünfeichen memorial site traditionally commemorates all victims from 1939 to 1948.

From 1939 Fünfeichen was a prisoner of war camp of the Wehrmacht with thousands of prisoners from Russia and many European countries. After the end of the war from 1945 to 1948, the Soviet secret service NKVD set up “Special Camp No. 9” there. Thousands died in both cases.

The Fünfeichen group currently has 660 members and is considered to be one of the largest initiatives by survivors of such NKVD camps in eastern Germany.

Survivors had to keep silent about their fate in the GDR and came together in April 1991 to found the AG Fünfeichen.

“At that time there were around 250 surviving men and women with us,” Lüdtke recalled.

Now there are only 47 members who have survived the terrible time, almost all of them are over 90 years old.

"As bad as it was back then, people tell me they are happy to meet here and to commemorate the others in a dignified setting."

Relatives are almost always there.

One of the survivors is a woman from Jena, who was born in the camp at the time and is now more than 70 years old.

The oldest survivor at 102 years old, a Berliner, has since died.

Seven survivors from four federal states want to come this Saturday.

The director of the Federal Foundation for Work, Anna Kaminsky, has also agreed.

With the help of the foundation, several films and multilingual documentaries were made about the situation in Fünfeichen and the fate of the people.

Name plaques also commemorate the victims in the joint memorial.

"The best moment was when we placed yellow chrysanthemums on Russian graves in 2015 and the Russian ambassador placed carnations on the graves and lists of names of the NKVD victims," said Lüdtke.

Until 1945, Fünfeichen was a prison camp for around 120,000 soldiers from eleven nations.

Around 5600 prisoners from many European countries were killed, including around 5200 Red Army soldiers.

From 1945 about 15,000 mostly innocent people were imprisoned in the NKVD camp.

4900 of them died in Fünfeichen.

Many people were deported, including to Siberia.
