THE QUESTION

The publication of the report of the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Church (CIASE), on October 5, estimating at 216,000 the number of victims of sexual violence by a priest or a religious between 1950 and 2020, created a shock wave in the institution.
To the point that several voices have been raised to question the supposed link of cause and effect between the obligation of celibacy of priests and sexual attacks in the Church, even, to question this obligation of celibacy.

Auditioned at the National Assembly this Wednesday, October 20, and questioned on this subject, Jean-Marc Sauvé, rapporteur for the CIASE, replied:
"The commission says very clearly that we cannot establish a cause and effect relationship between the obligation of priestly celibacy and sexual abuse.
(...) We understand very well that it was not the obligation of celibacy that led to a kind of postponement.
