From Riesling to Pinot Gris and Dornfelder: A total of 17 wines from Rhineland-Palatinate can call themselves “winning wines” this year.
Among them is one whose producer was severely affected by the flood in July.
Bad Kreuznach - The Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture has selected 17 winning wines in the six growing regions of the state.
Overall, the chamber was “quite satisfied” with the 2020 vintage. “It was a vintage with healthy and ripe grapes,” said the President of the Chamber of Agriculture, Nobert Schindler.
The Burggarten winery in Heppingen an der Ahr, a district of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, is one of the winners.
Several bottles of the Pinot Noir from the Walporzheimer Kräuterberg location, which was awarded by the chamber, were in the tidal wave of 14/15.
July was destroyed, says winemaker Paul Schäfer.
The award is a confirmation of one's own path and also a nice marketing tool, says the winemaker.
"But it is much nicer that the wine tastes good to others as it tastes to me."
This year's harvest was only successfully concluded on Tuesday of this week, according to Schäfer.
"Eight weeks ago we would not have thought that we would be able to process this year's harvest in our own company."
In addition to the personal success for the winemakers, the award fulfills an important function for the process of profiling in the individual growing areas, says the President of the Chamber of Agriculture, Schindler.
"They stand for a wine profile of the respective category and thus also of the associated region."

The top prize went to seven Riesling wines, two Pinot Blanc, two Pinot Gris and a Silvaner and a Sauvignon Blanc, and three Pinot Noir and a Dornfelder red wine.
The grape varieties were specified by the Chamber in individual categories, according to the focus in the growing areas.
The two largest German wine-growing regions, Rheinhessen and Pfalz, are each represented with five winning wines.
Three awards go to winemakers on the Moselle and two to winemakers on the Nahe.
The smaller growing regions Ahr and Middle Rhine are each represented with one wine.
The champion sparkling wine from Rhineland-Palatinate was again produced on the Moselle.
A total of 15 194 wines, sparkling wines and sparkling wines from 1082 companies were rated in this award year.
Compared to the previous year, this is an increase of 2.2 percent - after a corona-related decrease of 12.9 percent in 2020.
After extensive rounds of tests with hidden samples, the Golden Chamber Prize Coin was awarded 4169 times.
