Customs public housing estates crack down on illicit cigarette courier seizure of 3.8 million yuan and 65 people arrested

In the past three weeks, the Hong Kong Customs launched the "Xunlei V" operation to crack down on the crime of telephone ordering of illicit cigarettes in public housing estates. A total of 1.4 million illicit cigarettes were seized in multiple districts in Hong Kong, with an estimated market value of about 3.8 million yuan, and 65 people were arrested. The illicit cigarettes seized during the operation involved 61 related cases, and the illicit cigarettes were taxable at about 2.6 million yuan.

Customs officers smashed four suspected illicit cigarette storage warehouses and detained five vehicles suspected of being used for the distribution of illicit cigarettes.

Those arrested included 51 men and 14 women (aged 15 to 68), including illicit cigarette sellers and buyers.

According to the customs, it has been strengthening its crackdown on illicit cigarette activities at different levels based on intelligence analysis.

If any public housing unit is found to be involved in the relevant crime, the Customs will notify the Housing Department for follow-up after the case is concluded in the court.
