During the discussion about services for culture in Regensburg, there was an exchange of blows between the mayor and her predecessor.

The jazz institute in particular has to fear.

Regensburg - There is controversy at the meeting of the culture committee in the Regensburg City Council * on Tuesday.

It's about the grants that the city grants to cultural associations and actors every year - voluntary services, but something that those affected are usually dependent on for the living.

In most cases the funding amount from the previous year is taken over, occasionally there are small increases or decreases.

And at first there are no major discussions about it.

However, two motions from the Brücke parliamentary group of the former Mayor of Regensburg, Joachim Wolberg, bring a dispute.

It's about the Bavarian Jazz Institute and the art association donumenta eV

Dispute over grants: Former mayor wants to cancel the grants Jazz Institute

The Wolbergs-Wahlverein would like to cut the Bavarian Jazz Institute's city funds from 2023. It was not until the summer that cultural advisor Wolfgang Dersch resigned the director of the Bavarian Jazz Institute at the Jazzinstitut - after 40 years of successful work. The reasons for Dersch's decision are unclear. But Wolbergs now wants to draw further conclusions. He does not understand what specific added value the facility has for the city of Regensburg. He didn't even know what was going on there besides the jazz weekend. And if the Free State wants to have a jazz institute, then it should finance it itself.

In fact, the previous grant (17,850 euros) is about rental costs.

But the jazz institute had to move last year.

The rent has gone up.

And now the Free State, under whose sponsorship the institute runs, asked whether the city would contribute to the additional costs.

21,000 euros have been signaled, says the cultural advisor.

But Lord Mayor Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer interrupted him.

“No, Mr. Dersch.

We do not have that.

We said we weren't going to increase in 2022. ”The Free State took over the relocation costs in full.

So what Dersch is taking with us: We will enter into negotiations with the Free State.

Cultural advisor: "The jazz institute has a very bad reputation in the scene"

CSU City Councilor Kathrin Fuchshuber reacts to the discussion with astonishment: “I find it astonishing that many here do not know what the Jazz Institute is.

Not even a former mayor. ”The institution had brought the city a lot of reputation for 40 years through the directorship of the jazz weekend.

One could show the institute a little "more appreciation".

You should invite the institute to the city council to get a better picture.

The evaluation of the cultural development plan, which will also be dealt with at the meeting, supports Fuchhuber's presentation.

There the Jazzweekend is expressly praised as a cultural institution with a special charisma.

The cultural advisor emphasizes that ten concerts under the Jazzfest 40 label will take place in winter.

He will take this opportunity to "take a dignified goodbye" to the old directorship.

But the notice of termination has been pronounced and the cultural consultant does not talk about the reasons for long.

"The jazz institute has a very bad reputation in the jazz scene," says Dersch.

He had received a lot of positive feedback from the outside for his decision to terminate the management.

But that's not enough for Wolbergs.

The city did everything at the Jazzweekend anyway, he says.

“Many can do the management”.

Against Fuchshuber's vote, it is finally decided to give the Jazz Institute some more money for 2022 and to negotiate the future with the Free State.

Point for the bridge boss.

Grants for donumenta: There is a lot of praise, but not more money

The discussion at the donumenta art association is just the opposite.

This time he only gets 23,5000 euros, 10,000 less than last year.

And the association had applied for significantly more (77,500 euros).

The Brücke parliamentary group therefore calls for the project funding, which has to be resolved every year and therefore uncertain, to be institutionalized through a permanent annual grant.

In contrast to the jazz institute, Dersch is also full of praise here.

The association operates art in public spaces, works internationally and has great charisma.

The work is set up internationally and "radiates widely".

The cultural advisor supports the demand for institutional funding, because this way the association can also acquire other funding.

But the mayor and her coalition majority see it differently than the bridge and cultural advisor.

Negotiations could be made about institutionalizing and increasing the funds from 2023, according to Maltz-Schwarzfischer.

Currently, the city's credo is “financial restraint”.

The bridge application is rejected with the votes of the coalition.

Wolbergs, who naturally has an often rude tone in the city council, then exclaims: “That's so pathetic.”
