You may have heard of jade rollers popping up lately, either at your local salon or on Instagram.

This product has become fashionable because it promises several benefits, including deflating the face, smoothing fine lines, reducing dark circles or soothing inflammation.

But do they really deliver on these promises?

The CNN Underscored team spoke with an expert, and here's what you need to know.

Benefits of jade rollers

It turns out that, even though it has become fashionable recently, using the jade roller is not a new concept. "Jade laminate has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine," says New York-based esthetician Debra Krueger, owner of Debra Krueger Skin Studio. "The gemstone is used to draw negative energy and balance 'chi', which is also known as 'life force' or 'energy' in traditional Chinese medicine."

The idea behind this is quite simple: jade is relatively cool to the touch and has the ability to stay cool even when it comes in contact with the skin. "This cooling helps to brighten the complexion, reduce puffiness, stimulate lymphatic drainage and promote blood circulation," says Krueger. "Healthy blood circulation carries oxygen to skin cells and will also help beauty products penetrate deeper into skin tissue. In this way, it reduces fine lines and wrinkles."

People who use jade rollers also highlight their ability to help with lymphatic massages. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels that carry lymph, a fluid that contains infection-fighting white blood cells throughout the body and helps flush out excess water, toxins, and other unwanted materials. Some studies suggest that lymphatic massages can help stimulate the lymphatic system, thus facilitating the elimination of toxic accumulations. Fans of jade rollers say that this ability provides brighter skin, an improved complexion, and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

"The design of the roller itself helps as it is a double finished component, where one side is a large oval stone and the other side is a smaller circular stone. Different sizes allow for adequate coverage in different areas of the face, "says Krueger.

Do they work?

Technique is extremely important

when using a jade roller.

While it can be an effective home skin treatment, not using it the right way could end up doing more harm than good.

"It's important to start with a clean, fresh face with the serum of your choice. Use medium pressure and take it easy," says Krueger.

Here is the step by step guide:

Neck:

"I like to work from my neck up. Use the large oval side and roll up and down the neck, and side to side with medium pressure, to get the lymphatic system going."

Jawline:

"Still using the large oval side, move it on the mandibular bone (jaw line). Start at the center of the chin. Work from the middle of the chin towards the earlobe and do five o six passes in each area. Repeat on the other side. "

Forehead:

"Next, move to the forehead, using the larger oval side. Start in the center. Work from the center to the outer temples, make five or seven passes and repeat on the other side. Then change direction. Starting on the eyebrows, move up to the hairline. "

Eyes:

"Using the smaller end with medium pressure, gently roll from the inner corner to the outer corner, towards the brow bone. Make sure to cover the area under the eyes and crow's feet. Roll forward and up. back, about 10 times. Repeat on the other side. "

It's also important to note that like many other skincare trends,

a jade roller isn't for everyone

.

"I would avoid using the roller if you have any kind of skin rash or cold sores, and also people with acne should avoid it, as the jade roller can spread bacteria," says Krueger.

"You should also make sure to sanitize the roller with a mild soap between uses."

Best Jade Rollers

Since there are so many options on the market, choosing the right jade roller is always a challenge, especially since not all of them are legitimate.

"If you're spending less than $ 20 on a roller, it's probably a fake," says Krueger.

"

There are many stones chemically dyed and polished to imitate jade

."

Everyone's skin is different, so it is difficult to predict how a jade roller might work for a specific skin type.

Using these tips, however, the jade roller will soon become your new favorite skin tool.

Here are some of Krueger's recommendations.
