Lucas Cranach the Elder is a star among Renaissance painters.
His Lübeck student Hans Kemmer, on the other hand, is still largely unknown.
An exhibition with works by both artists should change that.
Lübeck - The Lübeck museums are celebrating a discovery: From Sunday (October 24), paintings by the Lübeck Reformation painter Hans Kemmer (around 1495 to 1561) are on view in an exhibition in the Museum St. Annen.
According to the Lübeck Museum Association, 22 of the 29 works still preserved by Kemmer will be shown for the first time in the exhibition.
They are juxtaposed with 42 pictures by his teacher Lucas Cranach the Elder (around 1472 to 1553).
"The exhibition makes it possible for the first time to present a treasure from the St. Anne's Museum that has not been recovered to the public," said the managing director of the museum association, Hans Wißkirchen, on Thursday.

Did Rembrandt have a comedy side too?
In any case, he seems to be laughing half-dead in one of his most famous self-portraits.
For a long time the art world wondered what exactly amused him so much.
An X-ray image provides the answer to this question: You can see that the master had depicted himself at an easel at an earlier stage with a brush in his hand.

“In the past few years, our top-class collection of German and Dutch paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries has been continuously expanded.
These strategic acquisitions, together with valuable loans, make it possible to honor Hans Kemmer on the 460th anniversary of his death with an exhibition that is due to him, ”he said.
Kemmer was born in Lübeck and went to Wittenberg around 1515 as a student of Lucas Cranach.
In his large workshop he got to know the imagery of the Reformation and possibly helped to develop it.
This knowledge quickly made him the most important painter in his region after his return to Lübeck in 1529.
After a short time, the Lübeck management elite were among his clients, including councilors, mayors and wealthy merchants.
There is an extensive supporting program for the exhibition, which can be seen until February 6, 2022.
The show opens with the title “Cranach-Kemmer-Lübeck.
Master painter between Renaissance and Reformation ”on October 23 at 6:00 pm in the St. Aegidien Church in Lübeck.
