The SPD and CDU are currently ruling the state.

Almost all parties are already making headlines.

There is one exception, however.

Hanover - The FDP state chairman Stefan Birkner wants to lead his party in the Lower Saxony state election next year.

"I intend to run again and propose to the party to run for first place on the list," said Birkner of the German Press Agency in Hanover.

He led his party in the two previous state elections.

The new state parliament in Lower Saxony will be elected on October 9, 2022.

Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) wants to run again - for him it would be the third term of office.

"It is no secret that I generally have a preference for an alliance with the Greens," emphasized the head of government.

In this constellation he ruled in his first term of office.

His party is currently governing jointly with the CDU.

This must be an exception in a democracy, said Weil.

The CDU state chief Bernd Althusmann confirmed that he wanted to compete against Weil.

"I could well imagine becoming Prime Minister of this beautiful state," he told the dpa.

He has already signaled his readiness to run as the top candidate.

Ultimately, however, the party decides on this.

The Greens parliamentary group leader Julia Willie Hamburg was still keeping a low profile as to who could be the possible top candidate of her party.

“We said that we would wait and evaluate the results of the federal election.

We're at it right now.

We will decide in the next few months how we will deal with it. ”The goal remains to continue the upward trend in the state.
