The four-leaved single berry was named Flower of the Year 2022 by the Loki Schmidt Foundation on Thursday.
According to the information, the plant is mainly found in historical forests - i.e. in areas that have been forests for at least the past 200 to 300 years without interruption.
The foundation announced that the election calls for the protection of the old, natural and wild forests.
Hamburg - Such forests are therefore among the most species-rich habitats in the landscape in Germany.
They provide a home for woodpeckers, owls, red kites as well as numerous insects and mushrooms.
The berry is a plant whose beauty may only be revealed at second glance, according to the foundation.
According to the information, only one berry forms per shoot.
This means that the plant species can only spread to a very limited extent via the seeds.
Rather, this happens via rungs underground.
The single berry can be found especially in damp places.
The economic use of the forests and the associated drainage would have meant that the normally quite common plant species is endangered in several federal states of northern Germany.
According to the foundation, however, it is still relatively widespread in the more forested south.

On Thursday night, a driver fleeing the police had an accident and left his passenger behind.
The previously unknown was too fast when turning from Bernauer Strasse into Neheimer Strasse in Berlin-Tegel, so he left the street and crashed into bollards and traffic signs on the sidewalk, the police said.

Its founder was the biologist Loki Schmidt (1919-2010).
The wife of former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt (1918-2015) initiated the campaign in 1980.
The flower of the year 2021 is the Great Wiesenknopf.
