It is unusual when more than 400 entrepreneurs, economists and politicians meet for a reception in times of the corona pandemic.

In addition to the joy about it, things also got serious in the Rostock town hall.

Rostock - In the opinion of former Federal President Joachim Gauck, Germany needs qualified immigration in order to get a grip on the steadily growing shortage of skilled workers. The number of vacant positions is increasing continuously, but the industries are still affected differently, said Gauck on Thursday at the annual reception of the IHK in Rostock. The shortage will worsen when people from the so-called baby boomer era retire. "Now to pretend that this country can be led into the future with the local forces as it used to be, is simply a mistake."

Gauck referred to the "horror scenario" that is currently playing out in Great Britain with empty shelves in supermarkets and empty country roads. In Germany, too, the beginnings of such undesirable developments can be seen, which intensify if no decisive action is taken against them. That is why Gauck advocated making a second or third attempt with refugees if the first attempt at integration fails due to language difficulties or mentality reasons. Society should not be satisfied with having people in state care.

In her speech, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) named the expansion of the infrastructure as a focus of future economic policy in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

In addition to the traffic routes, the digital infrastructure is of particular importance.

“With the digital agenda, we have created the prerequisites for broadband expansion and the expansion of mobile phone networks.” When implementing this agenda, the need for a much more digitalized future must be considered.

"We need a gigabit-capable infrastructure across the country," said Schwesig.

IHK President Klaus-Jürgen Strupp called on the sidelines of the reception for a reorganization of the vocational schools previously run by the districts.

"We need a modern state vocational school, not a fragmented vocational school landscape that is constantly threatened with closings," he said.

Greater modernization and digitization of vocational school education is necessary.

The background to the demand is the shortage of skilled workers.

"Even in school education, the focus must be placed on the development of new junior employees for the local economy." Dpa
