Penzberg - next success for the Penzberg Paralympics cyclist Wolfgang Sacher: He wins bronze at the Bavarian championship.
Actually, Wolfgang Sacher wanted to cycle across the Alps these days.
Together with his former national team colleague Erich Winkler, the gold medalist at the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008 planned to take part in the Tour Transalp.
The week-long stage race leads from Bruneck in South Tyrol to Arco on Lake Garda.
“But nothing came of it.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the race was canceled, so I had to look for an alternative, ”says the man from Penzberg, who started a comeback this season at the age of 54 (Rundschau reported).
Race in the Allgäu
Sacher found what he was looking for at the Allgäu street price in Schweinlang / Kraftisried. The Bavarian Championships in cycling for the disabled were held on the demanding circuit of 9.3 kilometers with an altitude difference of 170 meters. The participants had to cope with a total of four laps, with a high pace from the start. In the second of four rounds, Steffen Warias, who won the silver medal at the Paralympics this year in Tokyo, attacked the top favorite.
Warias pulled away from the field with the reigning European champion Jakob Klinge, although Wolfgang Sacher was initially unable to follow.
One lap later, however, the Penzberger broke away from the remaining main field and fought for third place behind the victorious Warias and the second-placed Klinge.
“I already knew the circuit from before, the last time I was here ten years ago.
It's a very demanding track that really demands everything from you.
But I can definitely be satisfied with third place - after all, it's already my second championship medal this year, ”said Sacher happily at the finish.
Conciliatory conclusion
For the Penzberger it was a conciliatory end to the season.
After all, he had already won bronze at the European time trial championships and gold at the Bavarian time trial championships in the summer.
In the coming months, Sacher hopes to be able to train with the German national team again based on his results.
"Otherwise I try to continue training over the winter so that I can pick up exactly where I am now next spring," says Sacher.
