Authorities in Israel announced the discovery of the new sublineage of the delta variant of covid-19.
The mutation known as AY 4.2 had previously been detected in the US and the UK.
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's spokesman said that so far only isolated cases have been found and that they will perform genetic sequencing on samples from recent weeks to see if there are more infections.
