The Census and Statistics Department released the latest statistics on the labor force. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell from 4.7% from June to August to 4.5% from July to September, and the underemployment rate also fell from 2.2% to 2.1% during the same period.
The latest number of unemployed persons is 180,600, which is about 7,100 less than the previous statistics.
Significant improvement in unemployment in building decoration, repair and maintenance
The latest unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percentage points. Compared with the period from June to August this year, the unemployment rate and underemployment rate of most major economic industries fell from July to September.
In terms of the unemployment rate, the building decoration, repair and maintenance industry, professional and business service industry (excluding cleaning and similar activities), and the arts, entertainment and recreational activities industry saw relatively significant declines.
In terms of the underemployment rate, the decline was mainly seen in the construction, retail, accommodation and food service industries, and the arts, entertainment and recreational activities industries.

The Secretary for Labor and Welfare Law Chi-kwong said that as the economic recovery has become more stable and the labor market has further improved, the unemployment rate in most economic sectors has fallen, and the unemployment rate in consumer and tourism-related industries has also fallen by 0.2 percentage points to 7.2%.
Luo Zhiguang emphasized that the labor market situation will depend on the pace of economic recovery, and the consumer voucher program should continue to support consumption-related activities in the short term.
However, the development of the global epidemic is still a major uncertain factor in the economic and labor market prospects. All sectors of society should remain vigilant in response to the epidemic and strive to achieve wider vaccination.
