In itself, the news is not really news: both the willingness to negotiate and their reality were an extremely poorly kept secret.
In 2017, the national understanding conference, convened by then-president Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, resulted in a request for discussion with Iyad Ag Ghaly and Amadou Koufa, both from the Support Group for Islam and Muslims. (GSIM), a movement linked to al-Qaida.
Two years later, another meeting, the National Concertation, concluded with the same request, a sign of weariness after eight years of a never-ending conflict.
