Eisenach / Jena / Rudolstadt / Weimar - Between 2000 and 2007, a total of ten people in Germany were murdered by the right-wing extremist terror group “National Socialist Underground” (NSU) from Thuringia.

They also carried out 43 attempted murders, three bomb attacks and 15 robberies.

Even if a verdict was pronounced in the so-called NSU trial in July 2018, many questions remain unanswered.

Politicians: Investigate after the attack on journalists

The Thuringian parliamentary groups of the Left and the Greens have demanded clarification about the police operation after an attack on two journalists by right-wing extremists in the Fretterode area.

"The fact that the searches were apparently very hesitant and delayed in the aftermath of the crime is in any case not an expression of a consistent fight against neo-Nazi violence," said the Green Party politician Madeleine Henfling on Wednesday.

The deeds and backgrounds of the NSU complex are to be taken up with productions, concerts, readings, discussions and workshops.

Cities involved are those that are directly linked to the acts of the trio or in which it was hiding.

Here are some events at a glance:

Jena

In Jena, the city from which the trio came, the three-part project “The Courageous Majority” leads through the city and through time.

Interested parties can, for example, be guided through Jena free of charge using their smartphones and the Internet and listen to a mixture of stories and interviews.

A two-day panel will also shed light on October 30th and 31st with expert lectures, workshops, films and personal perspectives and experiences.

In addition, the performances taking place there will be broadcast to Jena on three evenings from seven cities.

The play “Sladek” will also be performed on November 4th and 5th as part of “No closing line!”.

Eisenach

In Eisenach, the NSU ended in November 2011 with the suicide of two people involved and letters of confession from the right-wing extremist group.

After the premiere on Thursday evening, the chamber play “Furor” about disenchantment with politics, radicalization and opinion-making on the Internet can also be seen on Friday and Saturday (7.30 p.m.).

It is a production by the Rudolstadt Theater.

In the Eisenach City Palace, until November 7th, in the “Open Process” exhibition, over 20 articles will be on display that show people's experiences of racism in East Germany.

The exhibition opened in the Jena Art Collection in mid-August this year.

From Monday to Friday, young people can also design their own Eisenach in a workshop.

Rudolstadt

A number of events also take place in Rudolstadt.

For the research project entitled “May I ask you what ...?”, With which the project starts on site, among other things, young adults in the Rudolstadt-Saalfel area asked their parents, grandparents or friends about their memories of the NSU.

The “Open Trial” exhibition can also be seen in the Saalfeld Palace Chapel until November 7th.

On October 31st there will be a piano concert in the Rudolstadt Theater as part of the oratorio “Manifest (o)”.

In addition, the comedienne Idil Baydar will lead a podium discussion on remembrance culture on October 31st.

Weimar

The more than five-year trial against the right-wing extremist terror cell had already been dealt with in the summer with the co-production "438 days of the NSU trial - a theatrical search for traces" in a 17-day series.

With the play “Hannibal”, another trial is to be taken up on November 6th - that of the Bundeswehr officer Franco A, who is suspected of terrorism.

There will also be a cooking workshop in cooperation with Caritas and the adult education center.

On November 1, 1996, the later core trio of the NSU appeared together with others from their Jena neo-Nazi comradeship in the Buchenwald memorial on Ettersberg near Weimar in order to provoke.
