The 77-year-old received the 25,000 euro “Global Compact Award” from the Tüv Rheinland Foundation in Cologne on Thursday - for his sustainable approach to nature and the mountain people.

The reading competition, which has existed since 1959, is under the patronage of the Federal President and is organized annually by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels in cooperation with bookshops, libraries, schools and cultural institutions.

Around 600,000 sixth grade students from all over Germany take part in the competition every year.

The 16 participants in the final will be determined at the state level.

They are allowed to read from their favorite book, while in the finale they have to rehearse and recite a text passage that is new to them.
