Before the third round of coalition negotiations between the SPD and the Left on Friday, the housing industry also formulated its expectations of the future government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. "The greatest challenge in the coming years will be to reconcile the requirements of climate protection with affordable housing," said Andreas Breitner, Director of the Association of North German Housing Companies (VNW) on Thursday.

Schwerin - Many older residential buildings cannot be brought into a condition with which today's climate protection requirements can be met, even through energy renovation or the installation of modern heating systems. Therefore, the so-called neighborhood approach should be chosen, in which the reduction of CO2 emissions is achieved through different technical solutions at the neighborhood level. "That is sustainable and does not endanger the low rents," explained Breitner.

The head of the association noted a constructive and trusting cooperation with the previous state government for the past legislative period. "In the interests of the tenants, this should definitely be continued," he emphasized. The left called on Breitner for a pragmatic policy. “Our main concern is that the conditions for affordable housing are strengthened throughout the country. Post-socialist expropriation fantasies of some West German leftists are out of place ”, said Breitner, without directly responding to the referendum on the expropriation of large housing groups in Berlin.

Even if there is no housing shortage in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, there is still a lack of housing in some cities that is affordable for people with medium or low incomes.

“In the coming years, attractive funding programs will therefore be necessary.

In the end, the only thing that helps is building and renovating inexpensive apartments, ”emphasized Breitner.

In rural areas, where apartments from GDR times were often empty, demolition must also be encouraged.

Urban redevelopment in the east remains a permanent task, as does the adaptation of residential buildings to the needs of an aging society.

Breitner called for subsidy programs for retrofitting elevators or bathroom renovations.
