Billionaire Robert Durst has been charged with the murder of his first wife, Kathie Durst,

almost four decades after she disappeared

and just days after he was sentenced to life in prison in California for killing someone who allegedly helped him cover up the murder.

New York authorities confirmed Friday that they have filed charges against Durst, 78, whose lawyers said he was hospitalized in Los Angeles after testing positive for COVID-19 and is on a ventilator.

A state police detective filed a criminal complaint against Durst Tuesday in Lewisboro, New York, municipal court.

He charges him with second degree murder for the death of Kathie Durst, who disappeared in 1982. It is the first time he has been charged with her disappearance.

An HBO documentary in 2015 renewed public interest in the case, after the heir appeared to admit to killing people.

In one scene, he got out of the camera's focus and muttered to himself while the mic was still on: "I killed them all, of course."

Through an attorney, Kathie Durst's family expressed satisfaction with the charges brought against the mogul, although they declined to comment further until a grand jury formalizes the indictment, a legal requirement in New York.

Kathie Durst was 29 years old and about to graduate from medical school when she was last seen.

Durst, who was 38 at the time, had been married to her for almost nine years and they lived in South Salem, a community in Lewisboro.

The woman's body was never found.

At the request of her family, she was declared legally dead in 2017.

The state police investigator

Joseph Becerra reopened the investigation in 1999

after receiving a clue about the disappearance.

Back then authorities searched a lake and the couple's home, but found little evidence.

Becerra compared the case to looking for "a needle in a haystack."

At Robert Durst's trial in California, Becerra testified that she had wanted to interview Susan Berman, a friend of Durst's, but was never able to do so because she died in 2000.

Los Angeles prosecutors claimed Durst killed Berman because she was preparing to confess to police how she helped him cover up the murder of Kathie Durst.

Following Berman's death, Durst went into hiding, posing as a mute woman living in a cheap apartment in Galveston, Texas.

There, he killed a neighbor and dismembered him, but he was acquitted after he assured the jury that he had done it in self-defense.

Durst was sentenced in 2016 to more than seven years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a federal count of illegal possession of weapons following a 2015 arrest in New Orleans.

"He said he wanted to talk and shot him," says Rocío Sifuentes about her sister's death.

Durst's family owns more than 16 million square feet of real estate in New York and Philadelphia

and owns 10% of the One World Trade Center skyscraper in Manhattan, formerly known as the Freedom Tower.

Family members bought Robert Durst's stake in their business for $ 65 million in 2006.

In the 2015 HBO documentary

The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst

, he acknowledged that he made up details about what happened the night his first wife disappeared because he “expected that everything would disappear like this ”.

I hoped everything would go away like this "

Robert Durst convicted of murder

Durst, who has numerous medical problems, sat in a wheelchair for much of the trial in California.

He read his lawyer's questions on an electronic tablet that transcribed them live because he has difficulty hearing.

During his testimony at his Los Angeles trial, Durst denied that he had killed Kathie Durst.

When his wife's medical school called to ask why he hadn't been to class, he said he was probably "having fun somewhere" and suggested that it was possible that he had been using drugs.

"I didn't think anything had happened to her

,

"

said Durst, speaking slowly in a tight, husky voice, "it was something more like: What did Kathie do to herself?"
