There is criticism of the Nord Stream 2 gas project. Annalena Baerbock demands that the commissioning be put on hold for the time being - because of Russia's “poker game”.

Berlin - Annalena Baerbock has clearly criticized Russia.

With a view to the high energy prices, the co-boss of the Greens accused Moscow of a “game of poker” and “downward” gas deliveries.

“We mustn't allow ourselves to be blackmailed,” said Baerbock to the

.

It is also a matter of critically questioning the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea natural gas pipeline.

Annalena Baerbock: Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea gas pipeline will not be commissioned for the time being

Although Russia is supplying gas to Europe in accordance with the contract, the gas storage facilities are comparatively empty.

“This is likely to have been brought about by the Russian side in order to force the rapid commissioning of Nord Stream 2 - even if not all legal requirements have yet been met,” Baerbock continued.

The Green Chancellor candidate in the last federal election therefore pleaded for Nord Stream 2 not to be granted an operating license for the time being.

According to European energy law, the operator of Nord Stream 2 “must be different from the one who conducts the gas”.

"As long as it is one and the same group, the operating license may not be granted."

Nord Stream 2: Experts criticized controversial gas pipeline - "Fatal"

Deutsche Umwelthilfe had recently also clearly criticized Nord Stream 2.

"Fossil lock-ins such as the commissioning of Nord Stream 2 or the construction of LNG terminals are not necessary in terms of energy policy, irresponsible in terms of climate policy and fatal in terms of economic policy," it said in a statement.

"They aggravate such extreme situations on the market as they are at the moment rather than being part of the solution."

In view of the increased gas prices, the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) criticized the policy and described the problem as "homemade".

The DIW energy expert Claudia Kemfert sees a clear interest on the Russian side in reducing gas supplies in order to accelerate the commissioning of Nord Stream 2.

“It was said that with the commissioning of Nord Stream 2, more gas could flow to Europe,” Kemfert recently told the Phoenix broadcaster.

"This gives the impression that the price on the European natural gas market is being artificially driven up in order to at least increase the pressure that Nord Stream 2 will be completed quickly."

Nord Stream 2: "Greens almost always take sharp anti-Russian positions"

Meanwhile, Russia hopes that the commissioning of the Baltic Sea pipeline will not be delayed. In Moscow, politicians had recently repeatedly referred to the Greens' critical stance towards the pipeline. The Russian foreign politician Konstantin Kosachev is particularly skeptical about the possibility of a new green foreign minister. That would not be a very promising perspective, he wrote on Facebook after the federal election. "The Greens are no longer the anti-system rebels of the 1990s." But they almost always take sharp anti-Russian positions on issues that are important to us, "he said, referring to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and the incorporation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.

It is still unclear when Nord Stream 2 will be launched.

The pipeline was filled with gas for the first time at the beginning of October.

Gazprom plans to pump 5.6 billion cubic meters of gas through Nord Stream 2 this year.

The 1230-kilometer pipeline, which has two strands, is expected to deliver 55 billion cubic meters of gas annually.

According to the operating company, this can supply 26 million households.
