"The best solution for both sides": Bayerische Bar voluntarily introduces 2G - criticism of Corona policy

From today 2G applies in the Freising Q-Bar. The owner is convinced that with this concept he will certainly not be the last innkeeper in the cathedral city.

From today 2G applies in the Freising Q-Bar.

The owner is convinced that with this concept he will certainly not be the last innkeeper in the cathedral city.

Freising

- The weather is autumnal, the Covid numbers are also increasing in Freising.

Will the Freising hospitality industry opt for a 2G regulation?

The owner of the Freising cult café Q-Bar, Johannes Wunner, says “yes” - and takes the first step.

From this Friday onwards, only those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered will be allowed to enter the Q-Bar.

The FT asked Wunner.

Bavaria: 2G regulation in gastronomy - "mainly to avoid contagion"

Mr. Wunner, what made you decide to use 2G instead of 3G or 3G plus for the autumn and winter seasons?

Mainly to avoid contamination in the bar, which would be preprogrammed by faulty self-tests, and to protect guests and employees as best as possible.

Due to the narrowness of the bar, a minimum distance is hardly feasible, but guests and employees should be able to move as freely as possible.

The subject of 3G, 3G plus and 2G is very emotionally charged.

Are the guests showing understanding for this step?

Because this means that tested unvaccinated people and people who cannot be vaccinated for health reasons are excluded.

I think each of our guests will certainly understand this step, as it did in March 2020 when we voluntarily closed the Q-Bar days before the state-mandated lockdown.

Regarding the exclusion of unvaccinated people - which is certainly a sensitive topic - I would just like to say that this problem is being shifted from politics to restaurateurs.

There is no clear message “from above”, as is the case in Austria, for example, where 2G works very well.

And unfortunately in a society there are not only rights, but also obligations.

2G rule in bar: "I think each of our guests understands this step"

Recently, employees in the hospitality industry were also required to use 3G.

Does the Q-Bar attach importance to the fact that employees get vaccinated - or can they also serve customers after being tested?

According to the current Infection Act, the operator of a company must apply the regulation that applies to guests or customers to its employees, i.e. in the case of Q-Bar 2G.

The corona numbers are also rising again in the Freising district.

In your opinion, will the 2G model also be used more and more frequently in larger restaurants and cafés in Freising over the next few weeks?

2G regulation: "The best solution to quickly return to normal"

That's what I'm expecting.

In my opinion, it is the best solution for both sides in order to be able to quickly return to the hoped-for normalcy.

So anyone who wants to drink a coffee in the Q-Bar from today needs proof of vaccination or recovery.

Is the paper form enough here or do the customers have to provide digital proof?

The paper form is sufficient, but digital is also possible.

How does it look when the weather is nice and the pub area is open?

Under which rules will the outdoor area open in the near future?

The outdoor area is still - if the Infection Act remains so - not affected by the 2G rule.

We want to be able to have normal bar operations again at some point.

In order to achieve this goal as soon as possible - hopefully in 2022 - we unfortunately have to accept temporary restrictions.

And as I said: These restrictions are not arbitrary actions by restaurateurs, but are prescribed by the state.
