The Städel Museum in Frankfurt has received more than 90 paintings and works on paper from an estate - including works by Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Otto Dix, Max Ernst and Gustav Klimt, as the museum announced on Friday.

It is one of the most important legacies of the past decades.

The works were bequeathed to the Städel by the Frankfurt photographer, psychologist and patron Ulrike Crespo, who died in 2019.

Frankfurt / Main - The "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" (Friday) reported on it beforehand, which estimated the estate to be in the double-digit million range.

The works belong to Classical Modernism and international post-war art. They complemented the holdings in the most beautiful way, explained Städel director Philipp Demandt. “The Städel Museum owes its greatest thanks to Ulrike Crespo,” explained Demandt. The works also closed gaps. For example those that were allegedly “degenerate art” due to the confiscation of works of art by the National Socialists in 1937.

A total of 44 works from the legacy are shown in the special exhibition “Signs of Friendship.

Ulrike Crespo gives presents to the Städel Museum ”will be shown from November 24, 2021, together with works from the Städel collection.

The show, which is largely chronologically structured, is intended to show how holdings and legacies complement each other.

A film portrait of Crespo will also be shown.

The exhibition lasts until March 6th.
