The European Center for the Arts Hellerau in Dresden has honored the services of its first director Udo Zimmermann (1943-2021) for the house. From 2004 to 2008 he shaped it “as a production and meeting place for the fine arts regionally, nationwide and internationally,” the cultural institution announced on Friday. "With his work in and for Hellerau, Udo Zimmermann has made a significant contribution to opening up and developing opportunities for the contemporary cultural scene," said Artistic Director Carena Schlewitt.
Dresden - Zimmermann died after a long and serious illness on Friday night at the age of 78 in his house in the Elbe city.
As a composer, but above all as a tireless and internationally active cultural manager and artistic director, he “was formative for new music,” said Moritz Lobeck, director of the Dresden Days of Contemporary Music Festival, which Zimmermann once founded.
