The South African artist and director William Kentridge will receive the Ruth Baumgarte art prize endowed with 20,000 euros today (7:00 p.m.).
It is named after its founder, who died in 2013, who became known as an artist with an Africa cycle.
The foundation announced that Kentridge, born in 1955, is internationally known for his drawings, films, theater and opera productions.
Hanover - As a white African, he reflects on colonialism in his work.
A large retrospective of Kentridge's work was on view in Hamburg's Deichtorhallen up until the summer.
They also shed light on the crimes of the racist apartheid era.
The award will be presented in the Sprengel Museum Hannover.
The South African is the seventh recipient of the Ruth Baumgarte Art Prize.
Previously, the American photographer Nan Goldin and the British-Kenyan painter Michael Armitage received awards.
