Tübingen's Lord Mayor Boris Palmer was repeatedly criticized.

Now the party is drawing the first conclusions for the OB election in autumn 2022.

Tübingen / Munich - A political change in Tübingen could be imminent: The Greens are questioning a renewed candidacy of their controversial mayor Boris Palmer.

He has been in office since 2007.

A large majority of the party decided on Wednesday (October 20) that the OB candidate for the election in autumn 2022 should be determined by a member's decision.

A spokeswoman announced on Thursday.

Greens decide on Tübingen plan: "Line of dispute right through us":

In April 2022, the members of the city association will now be able to decide who will run for the Mayor post for the Greens in autumn. The party is breaking new ground. In the previous election, Boris Palmer was the only candidate in nomination events. Now Palmer has to reckon with internal party competition in the fight for the town hall. The application phase lasts until February 28th. In March, the candidates are to introduce themselves on a podium.

"It cannot be dismissed out of hand that the line of dispute in the city on the question of the OB election does not currently go along a party line, but through us," the board wrote in the invitation to the general meeting.

Marc Mausch from the city council had already spoken out before the decision of the meeting on Wednesday.

On Monday (October 18) he said: "There is at least one person who wants to compete against Boris Palmer." They had been looking for alternatives to Palmer.

Greens: OB election plan is in place - but Palmer is silent on the decision

And Palmer himself? The politician decided on Wednesday not to comment on the decision for the time being. He won't say anything more this week. "I'll think about it in peace," said Boris Palmer of the dpa. It's no secret that the Greens have been at odds with Palmer for a long time. In the past, the politician repeatedly attracted attention by making provocative statements that were not always in line with the positions of his party.

It was not until the beginning of May that a party congress in Baden-Württemberg decided to initiate a party expulsion procedure against Palmer.

The occasion was a Facebook post by the politician about the former German national soccer player Dennis Aogo.

The mayor had used the so-called N-word on the social media platform.

This term is used today to describe a racist term used in Germany for black people.

The OB assured that his statement was meant ironic.

Whether he will face a member's decision in 2022 will probably also depend on the outcome of the party exclusion proceedings.

Palmer is represented by the former Green politician Rezzo hose.
