A battle has been fought in cyberspace.
The criminal group REvil, specializing in ransomware - the encryption of sensitive data for ransom - was the target of an international operation orchestrated by the United States this week.
Based in Russia, REvil is believed to be responsible for the attack on IT management firm Kaseya in July, one of the major cybercrime operations in recent months.
The US government had promised to react and warned the Kremlin, urging it to
"moderate"
groups active on its soil.
This was not the case, so that America carried out
"a first unofficial response",
according to an expert on the subject.
The operation has not been publicly claimed.
When it comes to cyber, discretion and secrecy are the rule.
