Potsdam - In these two circles, pig farmers can breathe a sigh of relief: Since this Saturday, according to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, the restricted areas III set up because of African swine fever have been lifted there.

Since there were no further outbreaks in domestic pig populations in these districts in the past three months, the areas were downgraded to exclusion zone II.

The marketing of the animals from eight commercial operations with a total of around 31,500 pigs will thus be made possible, it said.

The change had previously been published in the EU Official Journal.

The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) had applied to the Standing Committee of the European Commission for Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SCoPAFF) to lift the exclusion zone III in Brandenburg and Saxony after three months instead of twelve months.

The other European member states had agreed to the abbreviation according to the Federal Ministry.

The first outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boars in Germany was officially detected by the Spree-Neisse district in mid-September last year.

Later Saxony was also affected.

In mid-July of this year, the animal disease was detected in domestic pig herds nationwide for the first time in Brandenburg.

According to the EU regulation, restricted zone III had to be set up around the sites.

Slaughterhouses are usually not ready to slaughter animals from the zone because the marketing of the meat is subject to conditions.

Infection with the ASF virus is almost always fatal for domestic pigs and wild pigs.

In contrast, African swine fever is harmless to humans.
