The Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) is critical of fireworks and other fireworks on New Year's Eve. Restrictions are also desirable this year, said Martin Schlegel from the Berlin BUND regional association. “I would appreciate it if there were public fireworks on larger areas at the very most,” said Schlegel. "It doesn't have to be the zoo in Berlin."

Berlin - Schlegel considers private firecrackers to be dispensable - with a view to the noise and the harmful fine dust that is released in the process.

On New Year's Eve 2020, against the background of the corona pandemic, there was a nationwide sales ban for New Year's Eve fireworks such as rockets, bangers or batteries.

"We are excited to see how the new federal government positions itself," said Schlegel.

In Berlin, the Senate also banned New Year's Eve fireworks and fireworks in more than 50 locations in the capital last December.

These included Potsdamer Platz, large parts of Sonnenallee and Karl-Marx-Straße, the Märkisches Viertel, the old town of Spandau, the Simon-Dach-Kiez, the Mauerpark and the Görlitzer Park.

"We have already had situations in large cities like Berlin that were no longer reasonable for anyone, neither for the residents nor for the police," said Schlegel.

A spokesman for the interior administration said that decisions on whether and which prohibited zones exist this year have not yet been made.

According to BUND expert Schlegel, there is a high level of acute fine dust pollution in places where there is a lot of blasting.

When it comes to air pollutants, however, the main problem is regularly exceeding limit values.

Schlegel pointed out that the noise from New Year's fireworks could also be hazardous to health.
