Despite the new state leadership, the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia could face the next election failure in May.

In a new poll, the party continues to lose.

Düsseldorf - The CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia has a new chairman.

Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst was elected the new state chairman with 98.3 percent of the votes at the state party conference of the Christian Democrats on Saturday afternoon.

The 46-year-old succeeds the CDU chancellor candidate Armin Laschet, who will be a member of the Bundestag in the future.

In the coming week, Wüst will also succeed Laschet as Prime Minister.

Provided that it receives the majority of the votes in the Düsseldorf state parliament.

Next defeat in the survey: CDU continues to lose in NRW - well behind the SPD

The timing for the takeover of the CDU could hardly be worse for Wüst.

In the most populous federal state, state elections are due next May and if you believe the current polls, Wüst's career as Prime Minister could come to an end soon.

As a recent poll by

Wahlkreisprognose.de

shows, the CDU could

face the next setback

eight months after the historic loss of votes in the federal election.

The Christian Democrats received only 22 percent of the votes in the current poll and thus lost three percentage points compared to the last poll.

This means that the CDU not only lands eleven percentage points behind its result in the 2017 state elections, but also eight percentage points behind the SPD.

SPD is also growing in North Rhine-Westphalia - the FDP is also gaining approval in a survey

The Social Democrats improve their result by 5.5 percentage points compared to the last survey and stand at 30 percent.

In the 2017 election, the SPD received 31.2 percent of the vote.

In addition to the Social Democrats, the FDP also gained votes.

The polls of the Free Democrats increase by 4 percentage points to 16 percent.

The Liberals are only just behind the Greens, who recorded a loss of 3.5 percentage points and became the third strongest force in the survey with 16.5 percent.

The AfD continues to lose and comes to six percent (-2 percentage points) and the left is also making losses and slipping well below the five percent hurdle to 2.5 percent (-2 percentage points).
