The newly built cruise ship giant “Aidacosma” has started its towing trip from the Meyer shipyard on the Ems to the North Sea. The 337 meter long ship was pulled through the dock lock into the Ems early on Saturday morning in Papenburg. Then it was about 40 kilometers long journey. As always with these spectacular overpasses, the "Aidacosma" is also towed backwards because it can be maneuvered better that way.

Papenburg - On Saturday afternoon, the ship is supposed to pass the Ems barrier near Gandersum.

The first destination is Eemshaven in the Netherlands.

"We are very pleased that our new cruise ship is starting its first voyage across the Ems," said Hansjörg Kunze, spokesman for the Aida Cruises shipping company in Rostock.

It is the second overpass this year for Meyer-Werft.

Germany's largest shipbuilding company has had to reduce its construction speed because, due to the extensive standstill of the cruise industry due to the corona pandemic, new ships are hardly in demand.

The crisis has also cost several hundred jobs.

The journeys of the ocean giants on the narrow Ems always attract many onlookers.

Environmentalists criticize, however, that the damming of the Ems is damaging the river and its banks.
