Closures and millions in losses - the corona pandemic is making it difficult for Hagenbeck Zoo.
Also because not all visitors who would like to go to the zoo are allowed to go to the zoo.
But now things are looking up again.
Hamburg - Despite the pandemic-related difficulties, the Hamburg zoo Hagenbeck draws a comparatively positive conclusion of the past months.
In view of the fact that you are still not allowed to allow all visitors to the zoo or the aquarium who are standing in front of the door, you are relatively satisfied, said managing director Dirk Albrecht of the German press agency.
After all, the weather played along.
Due to the corona pandemic, the zoo was only allowed to open on April 28 this year.
The zoo and aquarium had previously been closed for months.
According to the information, only around 13,500 people visited the zoo between November 2020 and March 2021.
This corresponds to a decrease of around 83 percent compared to the pre-Corona winter 2018/19.
For the past few months, Albrecht did not give any specific visitor numbers.
The corona pandemic also has serious economic consequences for the zoo: The limitation of the number of visitors to 4,000 has so far resulted in a loss of income of more than eight million euros.
With expenses of around 40,000 euros a day, for example for food or personnel costs, the problem is obvious, said managing director Albrecht.
"It cannot go on like this under any circumstances."

Tourism industry cautiously positive until the end of the year
The mood in the tourism industry has improved according to an internal survey after the summer season.
The industry is now looking cautiously positive on the development until the end of the year, as the tourism association reported on Tuesday.
Currently, the economic situation is almost never good during the pandemic.
"A good autumn season is a prerequisite for the factories to continue to recover," said association manager Tobias Woitendorf.

In the coming winter months, the rules for visitors should not change for the time being.
There are no restrictions in the zoo.
Only the number of people is recorded in order to comply with the maximum limit.
The so-called 3G rule applies in the aquarium - only those who have been vaccinated, those who have recovered and who have been tested are allowed in.
The Hagenbeck Zoo is the only large private zoo in Germany.
Carl Hagenbeck (1844-1913) opened it in May 1907 at its current location in Hamburg-Stellingen.
At the time, the zoo was the world's first gridless zoo.
