The State Office for Coastal Protection, National Park and Marine Protection (LKN) used concrete mats for the first time to strengthen the drainage channel in the Wendtorf outer valley (Plön district).
The new material is intended to improve drainage through the 130-meter-long channel, which has now been flooded and put into operation, into the Baltic Sea.
Wendtorf - The permeable concrete mats are smoother than the old granite revetments, said project manager Wolfgang Jensen.
The higher flow speed of the water is said to reduce sand deposits.
In addition, the planners hope that even with higher water levels in the Baltic Sea than before, water can still be pumped from the deeper hinterland into the outer depths.
The water permeability of the concrete mats is intended to prevent washouts and voids in the soil of the embankments.

According to LKN, the project cost around 2.8 million euros.
The outer depth had to be repaired because the old structure was damaged.
110 square kilometers of the hinterland are drained through the external depression.
The pumps create up to 3800 liters of water per second.
