What would have been unthinkable 12 months ago, as the cruise industry was reeling from COVID-19, is now possible.

A cruise operator will offer an epic new nine-month voyage with stops in more than 150 destinations.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's Serenade of the Seas will begin its itinerary in December 2023 from Miami, for 274 nights, before returning to Florida in September 2024.

In a statement, Royal Caribbean International President Michael Bayley said the voyage called "The Ultimate World Cruise" is designed to help anxious travelers "make up for lost time."

Travelling the world

The Serenade of the Seas has been a staple of the Royal Caribbean fleet since 2003. The 294-meter-long ship has 13 decks and can accommodate 2,476 guests, according to the Royal Caribbean website.

The ship will set sail from Miami to begin the global cruise in late 2023. The ship will cruise the Caribbean, before making stops in Central and South America, including trips to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and to the Iguazú Falls in Argentina.

The itinerary also includes the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal and the pyramids of Giza.

Travelers can book the full nine-month experience, or schedule a specific portion of the trip and visit only the itineraries in America and Antarctica, for example.

Royal Caribbean told CNN Travel that the price for the entire excursion ranges from $ 66,000 to $ 112,000 per person, excluding taxes and fees.

Global cruises were a staple of the cruise scene before the pandemic, but typically their maximum duration was close to 150 days.

  • This is how cruise ships have been transformed to deal with covid-19

Viking Cruises scheduled a 245-day voyage from August 2019 to May 2020 aboard the Viking Sun, but this voyage was interrupted when Covid-19 brought the cruise industry to a standstill in the spring of 2020.

In the wake of the pandemic, some cruise ships around the world opted to continue their months-long voyages, only without making stops ashore, due to port closures and growing concern about the covid.

Since then, cruises have resumed in many markets, with cruise companies eager to prove that vacations at sea are a safe and viable vacation option.

The Serenade of the Seas is still more than two years away from embarking on its journey around the world, but travelers can now reserve their cabins.
