The state forests of Lower Saxony have harvested 4.4 million cubic meters of spruce wood, mainly infested by the bark beetle, in the past three years.
This also includes storm wood left by hurricane Friederike.
For four years no healthy spruce has been felled, said state forest spokesman Michael Rudolph.
Clausthal-Zellerfeld - In about ten years the Harz Mountains will be practically bare if the bark beetle does not withdraw against expectations, Rudolph continues.
In the short term, this ensures a large supply of wood.
It has to go somewhere because only a fraction of the felled, unprocessed logs can be stored.
According to Rudolph, around 15 percent of the so-called round wood is exported directly.
The rest is processed in German sawmills or into insulation and cellulose.

Hacker attack on Stadtwerke Wismar
Stadtwerke Wismar claims to have been the victim of a hacker attack.
On Tuesday, the IT systems for the service were encrypted by an unknown attacker, the company announced on its website.
The security of supply with electricity, gas, water and heat is guaranteed, however.
"As part of our risk prevention, we have fundamentally separated the IT systems to ensure supply from our service processes in the commercial and technical areas," it said.

Meteorologists expect rainy weather with a lot of wind
The late summer weather of the past few days in many places says goodbye to Hesse for the time being.
In the coming week, the German Weather Service (DWD) only expects temperatures of no more than 17 degrees.
In addition, there is always rain and, especially on Sundays, stormy winds.
"There is a lot going on in the weather kitchen at the weekend," said a DWD meteorologist in Offenbach on Saturday.

The sawmills export 40 percent of their wood products, mostly to other EU countries and the United Kingdom and the United States.
This emerges from figures from the Federal Statistical Office, which the Federal Association of the German Saw and Wood Industry (DeSH) disseminates.
Due to the amount of wood, domestic sawmills have been working at full capacity in the past three years, according to DeSH.
The amount of industrial wood available in Germany has increased, most recently to 25.1 million cubic meters in 2020, after 23.3 million in the previous year.
