Munich and Berlin have had them for a long time - and now also Unterschleißheim?

We're talking about the e-scooters that pave the sidewalks of big cities.

This is precisely why the city councils are concerned.

Unterschleißheim

- Are the scooters now conquering the small towns after the boom in the big cities?

A Berlin company plans to set up 50 to 80 rental scooters in Unterschleißheim by April 2022 at the latest.

Whether the city council wants it or not - Bird Rides GmbH will move into Unterschleißheim, they don't need a permit from the town hall.

"That is why it makes sense to conclude a cooperation agreement," said Mayor Christoph Böck (SPD) at the meeting of the Environment and Transport Committee.

Unlike in Dachau, Unterschleißheim does not want to set restrictions retrospectively when the scooters have long been scattered all over the city.

"This is how we can influence"

Bird Rides is also active in Fürstenfeldbruck, Germering, Olching, Puchheim and Munich. In order to get the flood of parked scooters under control, Unterschleißheim determines where electrical devices are banned from public space: Restricted zones are set up in the green areas, in the Valentinspark and in the green areas and playgrounds of the schools. As soon as a scooter driver is out and about here, a message appears on the display: “You are in a restricted zone.” The scooters cannot be parked here. "This way we can exert influence," said Böck, "the scooters shouldn't be used on sidewalks anyway."

The city administration also sees opportunities for the sharing offer: The employees of the industrial parks in particular could use the scooters to drive directly from the S-Bahn station to work.

City hall employee Bastian Albrecht therefore defended the decision against restricted zones at the two S-Bahn stations: The scooters could be a supplement to public transport.

"It's a toy and not a vehicle."

Nonetheless, there was resentment in the committee: “It's a toy and not a vehicle. The scooters don't have to be on the road, too, ”complained Martin Reichart (FB),“ the conditions in Munich are chaotic. We don't need that here. ”He refused to cooperate. “If people are annoyed,” the offer in Unterschleißheim will quickly fail. The city should levy fees like parking offenders, he demanded: "If the things are flagged around in the area, they will be cleared away and that's good."

Rebecca Riedelbauch (Greens) also voted against a cooperation: She sees no contribution to climate neutrality in the scooters. Philipp Wallner (SPD) is also interested in the company's ecological balance sheet, he asked whether the e-scooters would ultimately be collected with diesel vans. Bernd Knatz (ÖDP) and Thomas Breitenstein (SPD) questioned the ecological benefits. Because motorists tend not to use e-scooters. A survey revealed that it is cyclists and pedestrians who switch to scooters. "I am skeptical that one will save car journeys, instead one supports laziness," said Knatz.

Breitenstein suggested restricted zones in the Bezirksstraße, because here the public space is already tight for road users.

From the point of view of the administration, however, the fact that you can go shopping with your scooter on the Bezirksstraße speaks against this.

The committee voted 9: 2 for a probationary period of six months, at the end of which there will be a discussion with the entrepreneurs as to whether there should be a continuation.
