A new face for French Judaism, and a new voice.
Élie Korchia, renowned lawyer, was elected by 89.8% of the voters this Sunday, president of the Central Consistory, the supreme body representing French Judaism.
At 50 years old, this father of two children, strongly committed to the defense of the victims of the Toulouse and Montauban attacks in 2012, then of Paris in January 2015, was the only candidate for this post.
He replaces Joël Mergui, who could no longer stand for re-election after three four-year terms, but who nevertheless becomes honorary president of this structure.
And who remains president of the Consistory of Paris, the largest of the regional consistories with 60% of the workforce and a budget of 26 million euros.
If it is very prestigious, the central Consistory is a modest entity with a budget of 2 million euros.
