20 years of the Asklepios Clinic in Tölzer: a look back

Bad Tölz - In a few months it will be 20 years since the Asklepios Group took over the sponsorship of the former Bad Tölz Municipal Hospital.

Bad Tölz - In a few months it will be 20 years since the Asklepios Group took over the sponsorship of the former Bad Tölz Municipal Hospital.

However, the upcoming anniversary was not the reason that the management and medical director presented the range of services of the house on Schützenstrasse at the latest city council meeting.

Rather, the city council members should get to know "one of the most important infrastructure facilities in the city" better, as Mayor Ingo Mehner (CSU) explained.

Already in May, the Green City Councilor Franz Mayer-Schwendner had submitted the application after negative headlines because of the dismissal of auxiliary workers in Tölz, the clinic would like to comment publicly.

Many people still remember the closure of the obstetrics department in 2017 (we reported).

In May of this year, the privatization of the Wolfratshausen district hospital with its 170 beds, suggested by District Administrator Josef Niedermaier (FW) on the basis of an expert opinion, caused a stir in the district committees and the population.

90 million investment costs

The Tölz managing director Felix Rauschek used the invitation to put the local clinic, which had been built by the city on the site of the former supply hospital and handed over to Asklepios by long-term lease in 2002, in the right light. 270 beds, around 800 employees, eleven main departments with eleven chief physicians and 25,000 outpatients and inpatients per year, that is impressive. Since 2002, over 90 million euros have been spent on investments and maintenance costs, 48.5 million euros of which by the Asklepios Group alone.

The number of employees has grown from 490 to 827 in the two decades, seventy percent of the patients come from the district, with three quarters of them being emergencies.

Accordingly, only 2,200 patients come to the clinic themselves each year, while 6,500 are brought by ambulance.

"As a regional basic and standard supplier, we can assert ourselves well in the south of Munich," said the managing director.

Emergency room situation: "undramatic"

The clinic is also an academic teaching hospital and has been home to a successful nursing school since 1993.

It was only recently that another year could be dismissed.

In the ongoing corona pandemic, around 400 patients have received “inpatient treatment” so far. However, the situation in the emergency room is currently “undramatic” (as of October 14, 2021).

The Medical Director Prof. Dr.

Rüdiger Ilg the recent departure of the surgeon Dr.

Heike Kremser for reasons of age.

As a replacement, Dr.

Stefan Rüth found a “good choice as chief surgeon”, as Ilg said.

The Tölz urologist Dr.

Peter Daffner left the house after almost three decades, 15 of which as chief physician, and was supported by Prof. Dr.

Roman Ganzer has been replaced.

Ilg was able to explain the effort that had been made to set up the stroke department.

The time factor is still decisive here.

The sooner the patient comes to the clinic, the less brain damage there would be.

However, in the meantime there are also new, computer-aided surgical methods that are proving successful.

"A lot has happened here," said Dr.

Ilg.

Obstetrics remains closed

When asked by the Green City Councilor Franz Mayer-Schwendner, the managing director made it clear: a reopening of the obstetrics department, which was closed in 2017, was not planned.

Rauscher said that the absence of the corresponding attending physicians could not be compensated for in terms of personnel.

An obstetrics ward that operates around the clock in particular requires a high level of personnel expenditure.

With Agatharied (Miesbach district) and Garmisch-Partenkirchen as well as the Wolfratshausen district clinic, which cooperates with Starnberg, “today you have a construction that works”.

Clinic location: "Bashing" against Asklepios

Rauschek regretted that in the most recent dispute about the privatization of the Wolfratshauser Klinik (we reported) "bashing against Tölz as collateral damage": "That was unpleasant for us." There are enough problems with the "federal political will, the number." of hospitals ”. Since the thumbscrews are constantly tightened, it has become much more difficult for houses like Wolfratshausen and Bad Tölz to meet the legal requirements. So you can't keep sufficient staff available day and night everywhere.

"Everyone offers certain areas of focus where we can complement each other," said Rauschek.

Wolfratshausen has a palliative care department, Tölz is the point of contact for stroke patients and accidents.

In addition, they also cooperate with the Munich clinics.

Patients are therefore often relocated in both directions by helicopter.

Franz Mayer-Schwendner did not give up when it came to the cooperation between the two clinics in the district and recalled that in the long-term lease agreement concluded in 2001 between the city, the district and the Asklepios Group, “the examination of a cooperation” had been explicitly included.
