Jena / Gera / Erfurt - Even a decade after the last opening of a youth station in Thuringia, the city of Erfurt is not interested in another house in the state capital.

“The state government's efforts towards the city of Erfurt have not been successful so far,” a spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said when asked.

The city is quite suitable for the establishment of another youth station.

In a youth station, youth prosecutors work under one roof with the police and youth court assistance in order to be able to react faster and more specifically to misconduct by children, teenagers and young adults.

This is to prevent multiple perpetrators from slipping into long-term crime.

Regular conferences and agreements are intended to optimize cooperation.

"Youth welfare houses are generally to be welcomed," said Florian Knauer, the chairman of the Thuringian regional group of the German Association for Juvenile Courts and Judicial Assistance (DVJJ). "The networking of the individual actors, especially from the police and youth justice service, is helpful for the young people and works well." The spatial proximity of those involved ensures better communication among each other and thus a better flow of information. "In larger cities such as Erfurt, it certainly makes sense to think about such a facility."

Thuringia has two youth stations so far.

In 2000 the first was opened in Gera, and in 2011 another was added in Jena for the city and the Saale-Holzland district.

In each of the two youth wards, two public prosecutors will be reinforced by staff from the youth justice department and the police.

On average, around 2,900 procedures were processed there between 2014 and 2018.

The Gera youth station was started in 2000 as a pilot project and, according to the ministry, can look back on "an exemplary success story".

Since then, the number of young suspects has declined.

"It was definitely worth it," said a spokesman for the Gera public prosecutor's office.

Although the workload is higher due to the joint work, "but the result justifies that," said the spokesman.

Processes would be processed faster and more precisely, problems could be "resolved immediately".

Overall, it is a "very meaningful and meaningful story".

For the independent cities of Eisenach, Suhl and Weimar, the operation of youth stations is not considered appropriate.

The operation of a youth ward depends, among other things, on the crime rate, in particular on the number of cases.
