California to remove more than 10,000 trees affected by fires

2021-10-24T16:31:19.981Z

Forestry officials said the KNP Complex fire could have affected hundreds of giant sequoias, although the full extent of the damage has not been determined.

After the wildfires in California,

more than 10,000 trees weakened by fire, drought, disease or age will be eradicated.

That task involves closing a nearby highway that is often traveled by people who want to see the two largest redwood trees in the world.

Trees could fall on people or vehicles on the section of State Route 180, known as Generals' Highway, or could be an obstacle in the event of an emergency and fire, Sequoya and Kings Canyon National Parks reported Friday. .

The road is closed due to the KNP Complex fire, which was 60% contained after

destroying 138 square miles (about 357 square kilometers) of forest

, and will continue to be closed to visitors for as long as crews need to cut trees and remove branches.

Cooler weather helped slow the fire, and rain is expected to start falling on Sunday.

The road connects the Giant Forest, where

the General Sherman tree, which is considered the largest in the world

by volume, is located with Grant Grove, where the General Grant tree, the second largest in the world, is located.

Trees located along the highway include redwoods, pines and conifers, fire department spokeswoman Kimberly Caschalk said.

The KNP Complex fire has been active since September 9, when lightning caused two fires that later merged.

Forest officials said this month that

the fire may have killed hundreds of giant sequoias,

although the full extent of the damage has not been determined.

"It's heartbreaking," said Christy Brigham, head of resource management for Sequoya and Kings Canyon National Parks.

Brigham said redwoods have adapted to low or high intensity fires and can survive, but the KNP fire generated high intensity points that could kill those trees.

The fire had different consequences in the forests of the area.

Most of these trees were affected by intense or medium fire that the redwoods can survive due to their evolution.

The most famous trees did not succumb.

Firefighters took extraordinary measures to protect the redwoods.

They wrapped fire-resistant material around the undersides of some giant trees, cleared the vegetation around them, installed sprinklers, and sprayed some with water and a retardant gel.

On Friday, officials removed the wrap protecting the base of the General Sherman tree because the danger of the flames had passed.
