The Italian government and Unicredit announced in a joint statement on Sunday the failure of negotiations for the takeover by the country's second largest bank of a stake in Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BMPS).
Discussions were initiated last July, as Rome sought to find a buyer for the 64% stake it holds in BMPS, which benefited from a public bailout in 2017.
