Hops are one of the most important ingredients in beer.
The intensely smelling plant is also grown in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia - this year with great success.
Querfurt - The hop farmers in the Elbe-Saale growing area have brought in their harvest.
About 3050 tons of hops were collected, said the managing director of the Elbe-Saale Hop Growers Association, Andreas Kunze.
“It's a good average year,” said Kunze.
“We finished on Thursday,” he reported.
After two dry years, the rain in particular was good for the plants, said Kunze.
Due to the precipitation, not only the quantities but also the bitter substances of the hops are well developed.
The laboratory samples also attested that the hop harvest was of good quality.
Most of the harvest is now going to Bavaria, where it is processed from green hops into pellets, explained Kunze.
The pellets would then be brought to Russia, China or the USA.
According to the association, hops are a permanent crop.
The rhizomes of the healthy stands therefore remain in the ground for many years.
The cultivation is quite complex.
In April, two to three shoots of the plant must be attached by hand to a wire that extends several meters upwards.
The hops meander upwards on this.
