Landkramerplatz: one-way street to defuse the new curve

With the redesign of the Landkramerplatz, the municipality is now aiming for a slightly bigger leap.

In addition, a one-way rule is emerging.

There is a compromise when it comes to parking.

- There should be two times three parking spaces, a swiveled sidewalk and a traffic-calmed Landkramerweg, which could even become a one-way street: When the Landkramerplatz was redesigned, the municipal council decided in its most recent meeting to expand the spatial planning. In particular, questions of traffic management preoccupied the committee when it was necessary to lash down the cornerstones for the next, then concrete, plan. The number of parking spaces and the design of the curve on the Luitpold-Linde were controversial.

The "expansion" of the square in the direction of the pharmacy had already been indicated in the preliminary advisory building committee.

As the building authority manager Hubert Zellner explained, traffic calming should be achieved by paving the Landkramerweg and possibly integrating the pharmacy forecourt: "On the mixed area, pedestrians, cyclists and cars would have equal rights."

New curve could be dangerous

The first concept by planner Stefan Goller (U-Plan) envisages no longer using the historic Luitpold-Linde at the corner of Bahnhofstrasse / Landkramerweg as a road divider, but rather unsealing the western carriageway and slamming it over the square. Roberto Sottanelli (SPD) used a self-experiment video to show the tight bend a car driver would have to take from Bahnhofstrasse. "There is a danger zone in the turning area, especially for pharmacy customers."

Zellner, however, pointed out that the paving urged drivers to be more careful.

And the sharp bend in particular forces him to drive more slowly.

Sottanelli suggested, however, that an alternative should be to keep the western instead of the eastern part of the fork in the road open.

The problem could be resolved, as suggested by Mayor Michael Falkenhahn (SPD) to turn Landkramerweg into a one-way street: "Then you only drive out of the corner, not in again."

There was a tug-of-war over the five vertical parkers planned on Landkramerweg as part of the design of the square.

“I would like it if there weren't any,” said Ulrike Stockmeier (FLO).

“It's supposed to be a meeting place for people there, not for cars,” added Thomas Hogger (Greens).

Two parallel parkers would be enough.

Discussion about the number of parking spaces

In contrast, the CSU councilors demanded that there be five parking spaces.

"As a community we tighten the parking regulations and then build too little ourselves," said Gerhard Heimerer, "so we make ourselves untrustworthy." Maria Dießl emphasized that many pharmacy customers are dependent on the car.

Parking spaces are urgently needed there, said Georg Schlickenrieder: "Where should the cars that have been on them go to?"

70 percent of the cars on the old area are long-term parkers, said the mayor, "probably residents." He also pointed out that both the pharmacy and the neighboring restaurant have enough parking spaces: "Nobody uses them at the moment."

As a compromise, the planner should provide three parking spaces that anticipate the one-way street.

The three parallel parking lots on Bahnhofstrasse will remain for the time being;

The only thing that bothered about them was Josef Killer (FWG), who would prefer to continue the sidewalk along the street instead of swiveling to the new square.

The plan is to replace the existing green corridor on this side with three trees.

"The square should be open and visible," explained Zellner.

Municipality could lease catering area

The new area will be paved, but will also have five green seating islands.

A fountain should mark the center.

To the south, in the direction of the restaurant, a raised level intercepts the slope;

the community could lease catering areas there, said Zellner.

"Everyone should be able to sit down there without having to consume anything in the restaurant," said Susanne Weitl (CSU).

One could also think of a food truck there, suggested the mayor.

The planner should now work out a concrete plan for Landkramerplatz with a new cost estimate.

The total costs should amount to around 300,000 euros.

"Finally something is moving forward", stated Georg Schlickenrieder, "I'm happy when I enjoy my first ice cream in the new place."
