The planned aja hotel on the community property on Bahnhofstrasse is off the table for the time being: 57 percent voted against building in the referendum on Sunday, 42 percent in favor.

A clear vote and an equally clear signal to potential foreign investors.

Until further notice there will be no aja hotel in Mittenwald. In the referendum, 57 percent voted against, 42 percent in favor. 3837 citizens wanted to have a say in the future of the disputed area. This corresponds to a voter turnout of 64 percent. “That is very good,” judges the head of the public order department, Josef Stieglmeier. For comparison: in the referendum on the indoor swimming pool (2017) there were 3900 votes and in the request for a council on the same topic (2018) there were 3500. And it's always about the area in question between the town hall and the train station.

After election supervisor Stieglmeier announced the final result shortly before 8 p.m., Mayor Enrico Corongiu (SPD), an avowed supporter of the aja hotel, spoke in front of the 20 or so audience in the Agidius-Jais-Saal.

“That is the way of direct democracy.

I would have wished for a different result. ”At the same time, he emphasized the“ constructive discussions ”in advance between supporters and opponents of this political issue.

Corongiu does not see the clear vote as a memorandum for the municipal council, which, with the exception of Ursula Seydel (SPD), is almost unanimously behind the hotel project.

"Then there would be a lot of Watsch'n in Germany." With which Corongiu is aiming for similar voting results in the Federal Republic.

This prevented a building sin that could not be repaired.

SPD councilor Ursula Seydel

On the other side, of course, they were very satisfied. "I am pleased with the large participation, which is why this clear result came about," sums up Ilona Benz, who, together with other guesthouse operators, had clearly positioned herself against the planned aja hotel. Benz believes that the vote also entails an order for the representatives of the people. "Now the municipal council is asked to develop creative ideas so that the property can improve the municipal finances in the future."

"Very relieved" is of course also the councilor Seydel, who with her point of view recently became a blatant outsider in the town hall.

“This prevented a building sin that could not be repaired,” says the architect.

If Seydel has its way, the local council should come to a conclusion "relatively soon" and "in the interests of the citizens" with regard to the future use of the approximately 11,000 square meters of community space.

It is possible that the aftermath of this referendum will be discussed tomorrow, Tuesday, at the next meeting of the body.

“The decision will of course be respected,” promises Mayor Corongiu.

Yesterday he had the unpleasant task of informing the investors of the Deutsche Seereederei (DSR) about the result.

Whether a hotel will ever be built on the parish property - a special area of tourism - has been more clear since this Sunday.

The final result:

Votes cast: 3837, of which 13 were invalid.

Yes votes (against the hotel): 2198 (57 percent) - No votes (for the hotel): 1626 (42 percent).
