Opinion | There is already a governmental alternative | Israel today

2021-10-24T15:43:20.081Z

Although the failures of the current government are screaming, we must not be tempted by the fantasy of "there are 72 seats in the current Knesset, let us hurry to form another government and now" • What is needed is to continue to strengthen the ideological alternative of the Likud and the right camp.

It's not just Shirley Pinto who tweeted what she tweeted this week.

Perhaps the greatest achievement of a right-wing party in actually forming the current government is removing the stain of Rabin's assassination from it.

People may have forgotten the demonstrations in front of Bar-Ilan University after the murder.

How suddenly an entire group that saw itself as an elite, Mapai's historical partner, was marked as a leader of hatred. Instead of the ponytail and the serpentine, those with the dome and tassel became what was called (shockingly, it must be said) - "cancer".

Just let’s not forget: giving up loyalty to the right-wing camp, even if it seems (very) rewarding in the short run, does not redeem a return to the role of daemon in the long run.

Not for nothing that Shas is not tempted to join this stream this time. Shas was already there and back.

She dipped her toes in the waters of the left, and soon returned to land.

It did not help her to join the Rabin government and to refrain from that fateful vote on the Oslo A agreements, which in fact led to their approval.

In a short time, when her electoral power increased and reached a peak of 17 seats in the 1999 elections, her former "friends" from the left again shouted at her: "Just not Shas."

It is a difficult task, to maintain loyalty to the road and the camp.

Launched as a fashionable brand of "neither right nor left", the government that said all ideological issues could be left aside, dealing only with Dumas matters - has become a government that is leading, with its eyes closed, a destructive policy.

Zero surprises regarding Iran, the return of the pro-Palestinian Egyptian-Jordanian axis to the center of the arena, the regulation of thousands of Palestinians in Judea and Samaria, the loss of sovereignty in Jerusalem and the surrender of a consulate to serve another political entity on its land.

Because when there is no super-ideology, when there is no leading vision and long-term goals, all government actions become a collection of "talks on the road", incidental events, small and large, measured by the number of political meetings and the number of cubic meters of water.

what's the point?

What is the long-term political goal?

No one wants to know.

Just maintain the "stability" of the government, please.

Although Netanyahu delivered Bar-Ilan's speech, he stood firm in the face of all efforts by the Obama administration to revive Olmert and Barak's concessions to the Palestinians.

Netanyahu did not evacuate Khan al-Ahmar, but led a new peace paradigm and changed the Middle East.

National guidelines outlined the way.

And today?

The US rejects the transfer of the consulate so as not to overthrow the government. Instead of the government being a means of realizing the ideology, the ideology is shaped as material in the hands of the government.

But even though the failures of the current government are screaming, one must not be tempted by the fantasy that "the current Knesset has 72 seats on the right, let us hurry to form another government and now."

And not only is it practically unrealistic - because a new right and hope will not run to break the covenant with a future.

Mainly because in this way, it may mean returning to power - but giving up the road and the camp.

What is needed is to continue to strengthen the ideological alternative of the Likud and the right-wing camp, and to show patience until it becomes the governmental alternative.
