For four years Marius Fischer-Franke was true to an old tradition: After his journeyman's examination as a carpenter, the Mammendorfer set out.

Now the 28-year-old has returned home - and has a lot to tell.

Mammendorf

- three years and one day: this is how long a journeyman should be on the move after being acquitted. Marius Fischer-Franke was even on the road for four years, since September 2017. "I had the feeling that it couldn't have been all," he says, "I first want to see and experience something of the world."

When the then 23-year-old went on a tour with a thirst for adventure and a desire for further training, he naturally wore the traditional garb, with woodworking professions it is a black gulf.

Soon there was another distinguishing mark: an earring.

Because there is also a painful ritual among the traditions surrounding the waltz: “earring nailing”.

Traveling companion Kathrin from Hamburg, whom the Mammendorfer had met after two months on a large traveling journeyman construction site, hit a nail through his earlobe with a hammer while his head was resting on a table.

“You are virtually nailed to your promise to stay away from home for three years.

You also have to promise to behave properly, ”explains Marius Fischer-Franke.

He wears the ring with pride.

The hiking book

A companion that becomes more and more valuable during the course of the hike is the hiking book.

"It is intended to collect community seals, job references and experiences," reports the 28-year-old.

“So that a stranger can get an impression of the journeyman.

The journeyman never writes anything in it himself. “Stempel brought many people together.

He was in one place for two weeks to three months.

Above all, he learned to do everything independently, from planning to production, be it building a log cabin sauna or renovating an outdated boy scout home.

"We made a neat new home out of the ramshackle, some of us were eight journeymans."

Without mobile devices

The journeymen network. However, they are not always available because they travel without mobile devices. They have at least one e-mail address - and sometimes there is an opportunity to check the mail. According to Marius Fischer-Franke, the point is to get along with what you find there. A basic rule, for example, is not to spend any money on overnight stays, buses and trains. Nevertheless, Marius Fischer-Franke made it not only across Germany, but also to northern Sweden, southern Europe and Morocco. There he had pity on a puppy who has now found a new home with a friend of a journeyman in Germany.

Of course, Marius Fischer-Franke also had negative experiences on the Walz.

"I didn't get a place to sleep and was even cheated out of my salary." Nevertheless, early termination was never an option for him.

In the four years he has continued his education, for example by looking at the roof trusses of cathedrals, visiting tool manufacturers and looking around at master classes.

"It is up to you how you use the time and develop yourself."

He does not yet know whether he will go into business for himself.

He would rather build a company with colleagues.

"Thanks to my wandering, I'm well connected."
