Khartoum-Sana

Sudanese demonstrators today blocked many roads in the streets of the capital, Khartoum, in protest against the arrest of officials in the executive authority.

According to Agence France-Presse, the demonstrators blocked roads and set tires on fire at a time when the Internet was cut off from the country.

The agency indicated that there was news of a military move in the country with the aim of seizing power, and that the army had placed Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok under house arrest and arrested other ministers.

The Sudanese Professionals Association said in a statement: "There is a military move aimed at seizing power," calling on the Sudanese "to go out to the streets and prepare to resist any military coup, regardless of the forces behind it."

In turn, Reuters news agency quoted sources from the family of Faisal Mohamed Saleh, media advisor to the Sudanese Prime Minister, that a military force stormed Saleh's house and arrested him early Monday.

There were reports of military reinforcements arriving in Khartoum after the arrests of ministers and civilian leaders in the Sudanese government.

Sudan has been in a state of tension since the announcement of a coup attempt last month, after which a sharp exchange of accusations began between the military and civil parties.
