The energy company Eon wants to build a distribution network for hydrogen and the hydrogen storage material ammonia in the Ruhr area.

From 2032, it should be able to bring a total of up to 80,000 tons of the two CO2-free substances to municipal, medium-sized and industrial companies, as Eon announced on Monday in Essen.

In the Ruhr area, the demand for hydrogen will increase, it said.

Essen - More and more companies wanted short-term procurement options for green hydrogen in order to make their processes climate-friendly.

In the project entitled "H2.Ruhr", Eon wants to work with the energy companies Enel from Italy and Iberdrola from Spain.

The energy required for the production of the materials is said to come “largely” from newly built photovoltaic and wind power plants in Italy and Spain.

The green ammonia is to be produced in Spain and transported to Germany by ship.

Eon wants to check to what extent hydrogen can be recovered and used from ammonia in the Ruhr area.

Green electricity is to be exported from Italy.

It is to be used in Germany to generate hydrogen with the help of a so-called electrolyzer.
