It still takes a while until Advent, but there is already good news: After the corona-related cancellation last year, the Herzogsägmühl Christmas market will take place again this year.

Planning has also started in Peiting.

Herzogsägmühle / Peiting

- Those responsible in Herzogsägmühle did not simply make the decision to cancel the Christmas market last year. But the corona pandemic and the associated requirements did not allow such a major event at the time. After all, the three-day event usually attracts thousands of visitors to the village, who enjoy the Advent atmosphere and browse through the extensive range of Christmas products and gift ideas.

Again this year, the organizers around Director Wilfried Knorr faced the difficult question in view of the ongoing pandemic: Do it or cancel again? A dilemma that has particularly preoccupied those responsible in recent weeks: If the event could only take place with the 3G rule, "we would have to send away people who cannot prove that they are healthy," explains Knorr. But that does not fit with the self-image of the diakonia. On the other hand, a rejection would hit anyone who had been vaccinated to get their normal life back. And no one can say whether the same problem will be faced next year. “We can't close everything for years,” says Knorr. So the majority had made the decisionto hold the Christmas market on the first weekend of Advent despite the concerns.

There is no 3G rule and no mask requirement applies outside

It was all the more relieved in Herzogsägmühle when last week the Bavarian cabinet decided on numerous easements for the Christmas markets in the Free State.

Accordingly, there is no 3G rule and no mask requirement applies in the outdoor area, alcohol may also be served, and the market area does not need to be fenced off.

"We are of course very happy about the simplifications," says Knorr, even if there are still one or two inconsistencies in the regulations.

For example, whether the employees in the stands have to wear masks or not.

"But these details will still be clarified."

In any case, visitors have to wear a mask when they enter the Deckerhalle or the Rainer-Endisch-Saal, where traditionally the Herzogsägmühler workshops, for example, offer their products for sale. The 3G rule does not apply here either, because it is only required for indoor dining options. “That's why there won't be a café in the Deckerhalle,” explains Knorr. In addition, as much as possible should generally be relocated outside in order to avoid too much crowding. The opening on Friday, November 26th will therefore also take place on the village square and not in the hall. Overall, according to Knorr, the market will be a little smaller this year than in the past with fewer external providers. Otherwise one tries, as far as possible, to a normal program, promises the director. The visit of St. Nicholas is also firmly planned."There is always a great rush of children, which is why we still have to see how we organize it."

Christmas market is an important economic factor

The Christmas market is an important economic factor for Herzogsägmühle.

The company will generate around 120,000 euros in sales with the event.

But that's not the only reason we're looking forward to the new start.

“Christmas markets also have a social function,” says Knorr, as Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger sees it.

This had campaigned for the easing.

“Families and children in particular have suffered particularly from Corona.

Visiting a Christmas market is a special experience for them.

That is why it was so important to me that these markets are as carefree as possible this year.

They are an important step towards normalcy. "

You want to go to Peiting too.

After a one-year break, the planning for the Christmas market in the center of the village has started, as manager Stefan Kort explains.

It is to take place parallel to Herzogsägmühle also on the first weekend in Advent.

The community intends to announce further details soon.
