The case of around 12,000 fish that suffocated miserably in two ponds of a farm in Großweil has been resolved: three children had built the dam that blocked a vital water inlet.

Her parents reported to the Murnau police.

- Michael Thalmayer says he “hoped hard” that those responsible would take responsibility.

“I couldn't do anything else.” On Monday afternoon, Thalmayer, who takes care of the “Loisachtal Forellenzucht” family business based in Bad Heilbrunn, found out that his pious wish had not been disappointed: the parents of the children who were in front of one Week the fateful dam built in a water inlet, which led to the death of around 12,000 young trout and ready-to-eat char, have reported to the police.

Parents recognize the connection between their children's dam building and the Pisces drama

According to the clerk Arlette Janotta, the families from Großweil and Schlehdorf had read the Tagblatt report on the Großweiler fish drama and then asked their primary school children who had previously told them about the construction of a dam.

It turned out that it must be the very momentous barrier that caused the fish deaths.

The parents immediately contacted the inspection.

Großweiler fish drama: children pile up a dam and clog the fresh water supply

The three children, says Janotta, had piled stones and grass clippings together in an exposed flood overflow channel, thereby clogging it.

Normally, fresh water and thus vital oxygen reaches several ponds in the breeding area via the device.

The animals in two ponds that were cut off from the feeder died.

For the children of primary school age, the consequences of their game were "not foreseeable"

“It wasn't at all clear to the children that there were fish living behind it,” says Janotta.

At the channel itself, which is 40, 50 meters away from the breeding, it was also "difficult to see and for children not foreseeable that the fish would be turned off the water".

The police chief described it as "absolutely commendable that the parents have reported".

They told of the guilty conscience of their children, who “fell from the clouds” when they heard about the tragic events.

Economic damage is around 15,000 euros

The economic damage, which is around 15,000 euros, should now become a case for the insurance of the families concerned - Janotta assumes.

The children themselves are “not of criminal age”.

Janotta is "glad" that the case could be clarified.

"The damage here is not very minor," she says.

"And it is good when people become aware that such a small cause can have such a great effect."

12,000 dead fish had to be removed from the ponds by hand

Michael Thalmayer had to eliminate the consequences. With his wife and a colleague, he fetched around 12,000 dead trout and char from the ponds by hand for half a day. They came to an animal destruction facility. Thalmayer wants to take precautions so that a child's game cannot become deadly serious for his fish again. He plans to install water monitoring in those basins that depend on the inflow. In the future, he will receive an alarm on his smartphone in the event that the inlet no longer works. In addition, the breeder will put a fence on the short section where the gutter is open, in order to visually delimit the area.

A step that Janotta supports.

A cordon will certainly help to prevent “something like this from happening again.

And it is also easier for children to see that they shouldn't go there ”.
