A 38-year-old man was sentenced to three years and six months in prison before the higher regional court in Celle for supporting the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) in eight cases.

The judges saw it as proven that the German-Lebanese had been supporting his brother, who joined ISIS in Syria in 2015, for years from Germany.

Hanover / Celle - According to the court, the brothers belonged to the now banned German-speaking Islamic group Hildesheim - an association which, under the leadership of the now convicted preacher Abu Walaa, is said to have motivated numerous people to join the terrorist militia. According to the findings of the Senate, the 38-year-old sent his brother a total of more than 17,000 euros after his departure and made communication devices available to him. Accordingly, he also organized the departure of the brother's wife and her four underage children to Syria.

During the trial, the man denied knowing that his brother was a member of the IS and justified his assistance by stating that he believed his brother wanted to help the civilian population in Syria.

Based on the evidence, however, the Senate came to the conclusion that the man knew about his brother's affiliation with IS, his activities on the ground and the ideology of the terrorist militia.
