State Parliament President André Kuper (CDU) handed him the certificate of termination of office on Monday, as a spokesman for the State Parliament in Düsseldorf announced. The move comes two days before the planned election of State Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst as his successor.

Wüst was elected Laschet's successor as party leader at a CDU state party conference on Saturday.

Laschet had announced that even in the event of a defeat in the federal election *, he would give up his office in North Rhine-Westphalia and go to Berlin.

The general election was disappointing for the Union (24.1 percent; minus 8.8 percent).

But the situation for the CDU is also tense in Laschet's homeland.

North Rhine-Westphalia: Survey sees CDU clearly behind SPD

According to a recent survey, the CDU * is losing significantly in North Rhine-Westphalia. Half a year before the groundbreaking state elections, the SPD is clearly the strongest force with 31 percent. The Christian Democrats only achieve 22 percent in the “NRW Trend” commissioned by Westpol. The results were determined by the opinion research institute infratest dimap and are similar to other surveys in which the NRW-CDU performed poorly *. Immediately after the federal election, which was disappointing for the CDU, there was also a survey in which the party in the most populous federal state was only traded at 20 percent *.

In third place in the “NRW Trend”, the Greens follow with 17 percent.

Behind them is the FDP (13), which currently governs together with the CDU in the Düsseldorf state parliament.

The AfD reaches 7 percent, the Left 3, which is not currently represented in the state parliament.

North Rhine-Westphalia: Wüst should be Prime Minister from Wednesday

With the tense situation, Wüst, as Laschet's successor, is given a demanding task: to get the CDU back on track.

Probably from Wednesday (October 27th) he will head the Prime Minister's office.

Until then, Laschet's previous vice, FDP Family Minister Joachim Stamp, will be acting head of government.

Stamp already congratulated Wüst on being elected as the new CDU leader in North Rhine-Westphalia and announced that he would like to continue the black-yellow coalition “together, trustingly and successfully”.
